Groningen is a bustling city in the north of the Netherlands with much to discover and plenty to experience. DOT
DOT is within walking distance of the Simplon Hostel and is the only full dome 3D dome theater in the Netherlands. Spectacular full-dome shows, live planetarium shows and their own home-made full-down Space and Sound are shown in a breathtaking cinema. All these shows guarantee a unique experience. The hall also offers space for speakers, symposia, theater performances, as well as performances by bands and DJs.
There is also a gastro bar with street food and resident DJs. In the weekends you can dance to 80’s disco and there are also theater and film shows for children.
During the winter months DOT is decorated as the largest Christmas ball in the world and during the summer months you can also go take a dip at the city beach. In short: a beautiful place where the energy of Groningen can be felt from all sides!

VRIJDAG PRINSENTHEATER
The Prinsentheater from VRIJDAG is located at the Noorderplantsoen and is within walking distance of Simplon Hostel.
At the VRIJDAG Prinsentheater, you can’t just watch theater performances, but also take theater courses and book rehearsal rooms. In addition, it is possible to make music and visual art in the other locations of VRIJDAG in the city center.
It is a very easy-going and cultural place where there is much to experience.

CITY BEACH
Next to DOT you can find the city beach of Groningen. In the middle of the city you will find a place to hang out, sunbathe, and swim when the Dutch weather allows it. So if you are at the Simplon Hostel in the summer and need a quick dip, the city beach is the place to be.

NOORDERPLANTSOEN
The Noorderplantsoen is a beautiful city park where you can relax, have a walk, or go for some food and drinks. The park has been a national monument since 1971 and is very popular within the city. Noorderzon, a bustling art and culture festival, also takes place annually in August.
Another well-known event is the park run, which is held annually on the first Saturday of November. The Noorderplantsoen is so popular among Groningen residents that Ralf Poelman wrote a song about it in 2007, a song that mainly the students of Groningen know by heart!
